“We will do whatever it takes to get the job done.”
That’s what John Amatetti, P.E. and Chuck Irish, P.E./L.S. said when VIKA received the call to provide surveying services immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon. VIKA was the first survey field crew on site within 24 hours of the attack and prepared for a 24/7 schedule. We provided a survey of existing conditions, prepared 3-dimensional as-builts of the building face, and conducted 24-hour monitoring of the structure.
Focused first on immediate concerns, such as rescue, recovery and evidence efforts, we provided detailed structural horizontal and vertical as-builts of the damaged structure to help stabilize the building. VIKA was responsible for providing surveying services for the structural engineer and all the architects and other consultants throughout demolition and reconstruction, as needed. We provided a redesign of utilities, critical stakeout of the blast windows, and construction plans for the rebuilding effort. Our 24-hour monitoring extended through all construction layouts during reconstruction, preparation of the final site plan, and the site plan for the remembrance ceremonies.
