Quantum Field & Tysons Technology Garage

Project Description

Quantum Field is a multisport athletic field and garage in the proximity of the Capital Beltway’s outer loop and Leesburg Pike. The recreational facility offers residents of Fairfax County an active, urban lifestyle that includes organized sports play.

The Fairfax County Park Authority and the Meridian Group collaborated to bring Quantum Field to life and further the county’s vision of a vibrant mixed-use urban area through the development of an extensive and varied park system.

Built immediately adjacent to the VDOT right-of-way, and constructed over an existing 48” transmission waterline easement, the 360-by-180-foot field replaced an existing surface parking lot and was built with synthetic turf, full-field lighting, tall ball-capture netting, a sound-deflecting wall to benefit field users, landscaping and pedestrian amenities, among other features. The adjacent, five-story, 331-car parking structure was constructed to replace the surface parking displaced by the athletic field and is shared with the existing, adjacent office campus.

VIKA Virginia provided zoning and entitlement, and civil engineering services. After site evaluations and studies, critical to the project's success was balancing the earthwork while maintaining sufficient cover over the existing waterline. This was achieved through the installation of a retaining wall surrounding and leveling the field, and serving as the foundation for the integral fencing, lighting, and netting.
